I’m not so sure about Jaffe’s premise that the rich have no mythology around money but I do think he’s onto something here. Money is just money – the rest is interpretation. Watch for my upcoming podcast on deeper “secrets” of money – there’s no accident it’s called currency!

A few years ago, I taught Ethics to Drexel U students who were just entering the business world. According to their evaluation forms, their work lives were deeply impacted by class. However, ethics is a living, breathing, adaptive science and can’t be taught like Math. I’ve learned from years of leadership [...]

There is an emerging awareness of a high return on investment in principals but we still don’t really know, and certainly can’t adequately measure, the value of values. True leadership requires respecting your own inner GPS and creating a workplace ethic for principled and inspired action.
We are past the tipping point [...]

I just read an article on BNet called, ‘Truthiness’ Can Make or Break a Corporation, by Jeffrey Pfeffer (May 20th, 2010 @ 8:00 am). “Truthiness” is a word Stephen Colbert coined to talk about how a business or news item “smells.” The truthiness factor is a sniff test – you can smell truth or [...]

It’s funny, there’s no doubt that the work I do is progressive but the irony is that values-driven leadership is fundamentally what the founding fathers envisioned when they drew up the Constitution. So, at the heart of the matter, it’s pretty conservative! Especially in a capitalist system, liberty and justice for all starts in the [...]

It doesn’t matter whether you’re running a Fortune 100 or your own small business. And it doesn’t matter whether you’re conscious of it or not: you’ve got a brand and it’s important to stay conscious of it and consistent with it. Here’s some sound thinking on brand building

An excellent article from American Express Open Forum. Values-driven leadership means always sharpening empathy. We used to think if a leader was too empathetic then s/he was too soft. What we know now is that without empathy, leaders become self-absorbed tyrants who build dysfunctional teams. Still, we don’t know yet how to measure empathy or its effects on the workplace so it’s still not factored in to bottom lines.

There’s a version of the Golden Rule in just about every culture and religion. Here are a few:
From the Baha’I Faith: “Ascribe not to any soul that which thou wouldst not have ascribed to thee, and say not that which thou doest not.”
From Buddhism: “Hurt not others in ways that you yourself would find hurtful.”
